The background is a decorative background of a GUI displayed in the menu screens, during dimension teleporting, and displaying the end poem.

Dirt backgrounds[]

A dirt textured background is used in the menus and settings.

Despite the texture of dirt being changed in Java Edition Beta 1.9 Prerelease 5 and Pocket Edition v0.2.0 alpha, this texture is still the old texture even in modern game versions, except dirt background when teleporting to Overworld.‌^{[Bedrock Edition only][1]}

Netherrack background[]

A background with netherrack texture fading from neutral to slightly orange is displayed when teleporting to the Nether.

End stone background[]

A background with end stone texture fading from neutral to slightly darker is displayed when teleporting to the End.

Nether portal background[]

A background with unanimated darkened nether portal texture is displayed when joining a realm.

in Java Edition, when moving from the Overworld to the Nether and back, an animated Nether portal texture background is used. However, it is stretched out to fit the window size more.

End stone background[]

An animated End Portal texture is displayed when moving from the Overworld to the End and back.

This background is also used when moving from the End to the Overworld, after defeating the ender dragon. It also displays the End Poem and credits as well.
