This is a list of words that are essential for a good Minecraft experience.

We encourage you to contribute additional words, along with Minecraft context, and any tips for new players.

Minecraft functions and gameplay[]

• Mod - Short for "modification", a mod is a player-made re-write of certain game features, to either add new things (new items, blocks, tools, mobs, structures, etc) or change existing ones.

• Features - Components of the game such as logic, lights, animals, blocks, or anything else that resides in the world of minecraft.

• Structures - Buildings generated by the game (Nether Fortresses, dungeons, villages, strongholds, et cetera).

• Skins - The visual appearance of your character in-game, that you either make or download from external sites.

• NPC - Non-Playable Character. AI in the game that you can interact with but not play as*.
  *Exception: one can view the world from a mob's viewpoint with Spectator Mode (/gamemode 3) in version 1.8+.

• Resource packs - A player-made set of resources that change the appearance of blocks, and the appearance and sounds of mobs (previously known as texture packs). (Note: Sound files must be in .ogg format!)

• SMP/SSP - Survival Multiplayer and Survival Singleplayer.

• Spleef - A popular, player-generated game in multiplayer, in which the player has to dig the blocks under his opponent to kill said opponent.

• PvP - 'Player vs Player', meaning that you can attack other players, and they can attack you.

• PvE - 'Player vs Environment', meaning that you fight against mobs, weather, and time

• Classic Creative - An old, but original version of Minecraft Creative mode. You can find it on the website.

• Commands - Abilities granted to certain players by typing them into the chat (example: /help is a command that will list other commands). Most (but not all) servers will not allow normal players to use most commands, but some servers will have more commands for players to use. It is very rare, however, for a server to allow players unrestricted rights to commands.
