How to make Squids spawn in Superflat worlds[]

Squids need water to spawn. Water can be found on the Wheat farms in NPC villages and can be collected with Buckets, which first have to be crafted with Iron Ingots found in chests or collected from killed Iron Golems and/or Zombies. Not quite a big job. But Squids will only spawn if that water is located between Layer 45 and 62, and the ground level of Superflat worlds is Layer 4. So you'll have to get the water up there. Here's how to do that:

1. Build a stairway or ladder up to somewhere between Layer 48 (shown as y=49.62 on the F3 screen) and 56 (shown as y=57.62 on the F3 screen).

2. When you're there, make a 1 block high platform at the same level of the top layer of your stairway or ladder. It can be of any size of 5x5 and above, but I'd recommend 9x9 to give the Squids enough space to spawn.

3. Build a 6 block high wall at the edges of the platform to make a "basin".

4. Fill the "basin" completely with water.

5. Leave the area and wait. Go up now and then to see if any Squids spawned. Have patience, as it might take some time. When the first Squids spawned, you can start your Ink Sac farm. ;)

Renewable blocks and tools in Superflat worlds[]

Note that ONLY the renewable methods to acquire the blocks/items are explained here - there might be other methods, but these are non-renewable.

Explanation of the symbols[]

Symbol	Explanation
	This block/item requires you to craft a bucket out of iron ingots.
	Gathering enough resources for this block/item requires a lot of time - have patience!
	Some of the ingredients for this block/item require smelting in a furnace. You can find two furnaces on the outside of every Blacksmith building, and you can use charcoal, all wooden blocks and tools, blaze rods or lava buckets as fuel.
	This block/item requires farming. Make sure to farm in a mob-free place, because otherwise Slimes and other mobs might trample your crops.
	This block/item requires you to get lava found on the outside of a Blacksmith building, or in the Nether if you have already created a Nether Portal.
	In order to craft/get this block/item, you need to find and kill the specified mob(s) to get their loot. Get your sword ready! (Sheep should be sheared instead of killed.)
	This block/item requires you to make a Nether Portal and go to the Nether. To create a Nether Portal, you need ten Obsidian blocks. You can find some in Blacksmith chests, and you can create some by letting water flow into a still lava block. Finally, light the portal with Flint and Steel. You can craft it with flint from the paths and iron ingots, or you can trade it from Farmer villagers.
	In order to collect this block/item, you need a pickaxe. There are three methods to get them: Either craft them with wooden planks/cobblestone/iron ingots/diamonds/gold ingots and sticks, or buy them from Blacksmith villagers (iron and diamond only), or find them in Blacksmith chests (iron only).
	This block/item requires you to grow trees. You can sometimes find saplings in Blacksmith chests, and when you've grown some trees, you can get additional saplings by breaking leaves. You can either wait until the trees grow, or you can use Bone Meal to grow the trees instantly. (Note that trees can only be of the Oak type in Superflat worlds.)
	To collect this block/item, you need to use shears. You can either craft them with two iron ingots, or you can buy them from Farmer villagers.
	For some of the ingredients for this block/item, you have to trade with villagers. Because Emerald Ore does not occur naturally in Superflat worlds, you will need to sell stuff to villagers to acquire emeralds. The (obviously) easiest method is to sell Wheat to Farmer villagers, but you can also find animals, breed them and sell their loot to Butcher or Farmer villagers. When you have enough Emeralds, trade with the correct villager type until you get the right offer for the block/item you want to craft.
	This block/item requires you to get water found on wheat farms and wells.

27	Powered Rail	Make sticks out of the wood from a tree. Acquire some gold nuggets from Zombie Pigmen (you need at least 54 of them) and make ingots out of them. Gather some redstone dust from a Priest villager. With these three ingredients, craft the powered rails.
28	Detector Rail	Make some smooth stone and craft a stone pressure plate out of it. Gather some iron ingots. Also buy some redstone dust from a Priest villager. Now craft the detector rails as usual.
29	Sticky Piston	Craft a regular piston (see ID 33), then use slimeballs from killed Tiny Slimes to upgrade it.
31¹	Tall Grass	Acquire some Bone Meal. Apply that to a Grass Block, and use shears to collect the grass.
33	Piston	Make some sticks out of the wood from trees. Acquire some iron ingots and some cobblestone. Finally, get redstone dust from a Priest villager. Now craft as usual.
35⁰	White Wool	Find a white sheep and shear it. You can also kill it, but I don't recommend that. Make a sheep farm for best results.
35¹	Orange Wool	Gather some Bone Meal. Apply it to a Grass Block and collect the roses and dandelions. Use these to first make Rose Red and Dandelion Yellow dyes, then Orange Dye. Apply that to any sheep and shear it. You can also kill it, but I don't recommend that. Make a sheep farm for best results.
35⁴	Yellow Wool	Grow some flowers by applying Bone Meal to a Grass Block, put the dandelions in a crafting grid to get yellow dye, and apply that to any sheep and shear it. You can also kill it, but I don't recommend that. Make a sheep farm for best results.
35⁶	Pink Wool	Grow some flowers by applying Bone Meal to a Grass Block, put the roses in a crafting grid to get red dye, and then mix that with Bone Meal to get pink dye. Apply that to any sheep and shear it. You can also kill it, but I don't recommend that. Make a sheep farm for best results. (Pink sheep also occur naturally, but are very, very rare, so the other method is recommended.)
35⁷	Gray Wool	Follow the tutorial at the top of the page to make a Squid farm. Get some Ink Sacs from there. Mix these Ink Sacs with Bone Meal to get Gray Dye. Dye a sheep with that and shear it. 35¹²	Brown Wool	Find a brown sheep and shear it. Killing it is highly inappropriate, as brown sheep are rare, and you can't acquire Cocoa Beans legitimately on Superflat worlds. Start a sheep farm instead.
35¹⁴	Red Wool	Grow some flowers by applying Bone Meal to a Grass Block, put the roses in a crafting grid to get red dye, and apply that to any sheep and shear it. You can also kill it, but I don't recommend that. Make a sheep farm for best results.

37	Dandelion	Grow it by applying Bone Meal to a Grass Block.
38	Rose	Grow it by applying Bone Meal to a Grass Block. (Also dropped by Iron Golems when killed, but Skeletons definitely are easier to kill and can also be found outside villages.)
39	Brown Mushroom	Go into the Nether to find some mushrooms. Take the mushrooms and plant them on dirt brought from the Overworld. Now apply Bone Meal to them to make them grow into Huge Mushrooms. Break these Huge Mushrooms to get more small mushrooms. Alternatively, you can wait for the small mushrooms to spread, but that would take much more time, so I recommend the bone meal method.
40	Red Mushroom	Same as Brown Mushroom, but with red mushrooms instead. ;)
41	Block of Gold	Go into the Nether and kill some Zombie Pigmen. When you have enough gold nuggets (you need at least 81 of them), craft the nuggets into ingots and then into the block.
42	Block of Iron	Get at least nine iron ingots from Iron Golems (or Zombies, but iron ingot drops from them are rare, therefore not the recommended method), then use them to craft the block.
44⁰	Stone Slab	Make some cobblestone. Smelt it into smooth stone and use that to craft this slab.
44³	Cobblestone Slab	Make some cobblestone. Then craft this slab as usual.
44⁵	Stone Brick Slab	Make some cobblestone. Smelt it into smooth stone. Use this to craft some Stone Bricks, then craft this slab as usual.
47	Bookshelf	Buy it from a Librarian villager.
49	Obsidian	Buy some redstone dust from a Priest villager. Get some lava and water. Pour the water anywhere on the ground. When it has spread completely, place some redstone right next to the water. Don't power it. Pour the lava on the ground two blocks away from the redstone. The redstone should be converted into Obsidian. Mine it with a diamond pickaxe. The lava and water are both reusable.
50	Torch	Grow a tree and collect the wood. Keep one part of the wood blocks, make sticks and wooden planks out of the rest. Now smelt the wood blocks into charcoal, with the wooden planks as fuel. Use the sticks and the charcoal to craft the torches.
53	Wooden Stairs	Obtain some wood from a grown tree and craft it into Wooden Planks. Use these to craft the stairs.
54	Chest	Obtain some wood from a grown tree and craft it into Wooden Planks. Use these to craft the chest.
58	Crafting Table	Obtain some wood from a grown tree and craft it into Wooden Planks. Use these to craft the crafting table.
61	Furnace	Obtain some cobblestone and craft it as usual with that.
65	Ladder	Obtain some wood from a grown tree and craft it into Sticks. Use these to craft the ladders.
66	Rail	Grow a tree, get the wood from it and craft it into sticks. Then acquire at least six iron ingots. Use the sticks and iron ingots to craft the rails.
67	Cobblestone Stairs	Obtain at least six cobblestone blocks, then craft the stairs out of them.
69	Lever	Grow a tree. Get the wood from it, and craft it into sticks. Also obtain some cobblestone. Craft the lever out of the sticks and cobblestone.
70	Stone Pressure Plate	Smelt two cobblestone blocks in a furnace to get smooth stone blocks. Then craft it as usual.
72	Wooden Pressure Plate	Craft it as usual after getting some wood from grown trees and crafting it into wooden planks.
76	Redstone Torch	Craft some sticks with wood from a grown tree. Buy some redstone dust from a Priest villager. Now craft as usual.
77	Button	Smelt two cobblestone blocks in a furnace to get stone blocks. Then craft it as usual.
85	Fence	Craft it as usual after getting some wood from grown trees and crafting it into sticks.
89	Glowstone	Buy it from a Priest villager.
96	Trapdoor	Craft it as usual after getting some wood from grown trees and crafting that into wooden planks.
98⁰	Stone Bricks	Smelt four cobblestone blocks in a furnace to get stone blocks. Craft the stone bricks with them.
99	Huge Brown Mushroom	Let a Priest villager enchant a shovel, pickaxe or axe with Silk Touch, or do it yourself with help of an enchantment table. Go into the Nether and find some brown mushrooms. Take them and plant them on dirt brought from the Overworld. Now apply Bone Meal to the mushrooms to make them grow into Huge Mushrooms. Break the mushroom blocks with the enchanted tool to get the block.
100	Huge Red Mushroom	Same as Huge Brown Mushroom, but with red mushrooms instead. ;)
101	Iron Bars	Get at least six iron ingots, then craft as usual.
102	Glass Pane	Get some glass from a librarian, then craft as usual.
103	Melon	Get some melon slices from a farmer, then craft as usual. It's advised to craft the melon slices into melon seeds and plant these to become independent from villagers.
107	Fence Gate	Craft it as usual after getting some wood from grown trees and crafting them into at least two wooden planks and four sticks.
109	Stone Brick Stairs	Smelt eight cobblestone blocks in a furnace to get stone blocks. Craft some stone bricks with them, and use six of these to craft the stairs.
123	Redstone Lamp	Gather some redstone and glowstone from priests. Then craft as usual.
126⁰	Wooden Slab	Grow a tree. Get the wood from it and craft that into Wooden Planks. Use these to craft the slab.
130	Ender Chest	Buy some redstone dust and an Eye of Ender from Priest villagers. Get some lava and water. Pour the water anywhere on the ground. When it has spread completely, place some redstone right next to the water. Don't power it. Pour the lava on the ground two blocks away from the redstone. The redstone should be converted into Obsidian. Mine it with a diamond pickaxe. Now you can craft the Ender Chest as usual.
131	Tripwire Hook	Grow a tree. Get the wood, and make sticks and wooden planks out of it. Now gather some iron ingots. With the sticks, wooden planks and iron ingots, craft the tripwire hook as usual.
133	Block of Emerald	Trade with Villagers until you have at least nine emeralds. Craft the block with these.

262	Arrow	Dropped by killed Skeletons. Can also be crafted, but later you'll depend on the Skeletons as Gravel is non-renewable.
263¹	Charcoal	Smelt a wood log in a furnace after growing some trees. Regular coal is not available.
265	Iron Ingot	Dropped by killed Iron Golems and rarely dropped by killed Zombies.

I'd recommend this food, as it's fairly easy to craft as soon as you've made a Nether Portal and grew some trees, and it gives you the same amount of food points as cooked meat does.
283	Golden Sword	Open a Nether Portal with Obsidian from chests and/or lava and water. Kill some Zombie Pigmen in order to get Gold Nuggets (and rarely a Gold Ingot). Craft some Gold Ingots with them, then grow some trees in order to get some wood for Sticks, and then craft it as usual. Golden Swords are also rarely dropped from killed Zombie Pigmen. Good to enchant, but otherwise pretty useless - use Wooden or Stone Swords instead, they don't deplete as fast and do the same damage.

291	Stone Hoe	Craft it as usual after growing some trees and getting some Cobblestone with water and lava.
292	Iron Hoe	Craft it as usual after growing some trees and getting some Iron Ingots from killed Iron Golems and/or Zombies. (I wouldn't recommend this tool, as it's a waste of precious Iron Ingots - Stone and Wooden Hoes are not worse, and you don't need the extra durability here.)
293	Diamond Hoe	Trade with villagers to get emeralds, then use them to get it from a blacksmith. (I wouldn't recommend this tool, as it's a waste of precious Emeralds - Stone and Wooden Hoes are not worse, and you don't need the extra durability here.)

325	Bucket	Kill some Iron Golems and/or Zombies to get Iron Ingots, then craft it as usual. Might be hard to acquire, as not every village has Iron Golems, and Zombies drop Iron Ingots rarely.
326	Water Bucket	Kill some Iron Golems and/or Zombies to get Iron Ingots, then craft a Bucket with them. Find some water and collect it with the Bucket. You can make an infinite water source with two Water Buckets.

382	Glistering Melon	Make a Nether Portal with obsidian from chests and/or lava and water. Kill some Zombie Pigmen there to get some gold nuggets. Then buy some melon slices from a farmer using emeralds. Now craft the glistering melon as usual.
384	Bottle o' Enchanting	Buy it from a priest using emeralds.
385	Fire Charge	Make a Nether Portal with Obsidian from chests and/or lava and water, and find a Nether Fortress. Kill Blazes in order to get Blaze Rods. Make Blaze Powder out of them. 386	Book and Quill	Find some chickens and kill them to get some feathers. Also get some ink sacs from squids (see my tutorial at the top), and trade emeralds to a librarian to get bookshelves. Place and break the bookshelves to get books. Then craft the item as usual.
387	Written Book	Craft a Book and Quill (see above). Select the item and right-click to open the writing window. Write something into the book (it can also be something random if you're too lazy to write a full story :P) and then sign it. Your Book and Quill should now become a written book, which you can either read or sell to librarians to get an emerald.
