Technical blocks are features that are internally their own blocks, but are not colloquially described this way. These blocks cannot be obtained (even in Creative) without add-ons, inventory editing, or bug exploitation. If they are obtained, however, their tooltips may be labeled as tile.<Namespaced ID>.name; e.g., tile.end_gateway.name.[note 1]

Block forms of items[]

Many blocks have the same numerical IDs as their corresponding items. In other words, the block form and item form are the same. Other items are placeable as blocks, but have separate block forms. Some blocks have multiple block forms, which may or may not include a block identical to the item form.

Other technical blocks[]

Some technical blocks do not have item forms, though many are related to blocks that are obtainable.

Namespaced ID Numerical ID Description
air 0 Air is a "placeholder" block. It appears when another non-waterlogged block is removed.
bubble_column 415 Bubble columns extends from soul sand and magma blocks places underwater.
end_gateway 209 This block is the part of End gateways that teleports entities.
end_portal 119 This block is the part of End portals and the exit portal that teleports entities.
fire 51 Fire is a block that appears when another block is burning.
flowing_lava 10 This block extends from a lava source block, often in multiple directions.
flowing_water 8 This block extends from a water source block, often in multiple directions.
monster_egg 97 Infested blocks (called monster eggs before 1.10) are stone-related blocks that contain silverfish.
movingblock 250 This block appears temporarily while a piston is extending or retracting, containing part of one block and part of another.
pistonarmcollision 34 This block used internally in front of an extended piston, to prevent blocks from being placed at this location. (Note: The head itself is part of the piston's model and hitbox)
portal 90 This block is the part of Nether portals that teleports entities.
stickypistonarmcollision 472 This block used internally in front of an extended sticky piston, to prevent other blocks from being placed at this location. (Note: The head itself is part of the piston's model and hitbox)

Legacy Technical Blocks[]

These were technical blocks only in old versions.

Namespaced ID Numerical ID Description
glowingobsidian 242 This block would replace all of the solid blocks used to create the Nether reactor, except the core itself. It would disappear when the reactor finished, but could be kept by mining the core.
invisiblebedrock 95 This block formed the boundary of old worlds. Currently, this boundary uses a different algorithm that does not involve any blocks.

Notes[]

  1. This does not apply to all technical blocks. For example, Nether portals are called "Portal".
  2. a b These are block forms of both coral_fan and dead_coral_fan.
