The slowing and sinking effect of soul sand is canceled by covering it with blocks of different physical heights.

Note: The snow behind the example blocks is only for visual reference. Physically, a block made from layers of Snow (as opposed to an actual Snow Block) is always 1/8th a full block lower than how many layers it contains, with its first layer having effectively no height at all.
