Anyone who plays or has played Minecraft Dungeons knows that there are many locations in the game that, many of which are required to progress through the game's story. These locations take place in a wide range of environments, each with their own special quirks and mobs.

Locations can be accessed by clicking on the map table on the camp or by pressing the M key on their keyboard. There are a total of three locations maps: Mainland, Island Realms and Other Dimensions. The mainland locations are available free with the main game while the Island Realms and Other Dimensions locations require ownership of DLC packs for access. There are a total of 34 locations in the game currently, with 31 of them being accessible on the map. there are 16 locations on the Mainland, 9 locations on the Island Realms and 6 locations within the Other Dimensions.

The main locations in the game can be found on the mainland. This is where the Orb of Dominance is located and where the Arch-Illager wreaks havoc on anyone trying to get in the way of him and his Illager army. The player first find themselves at Squid Coast, where they must rampage their way through a burning village to look for any villager survivors and defeat the invaders. After they clear the village and find no remaining villagers there, they move north to an open area where they set up camp. This area is known as the camp and is used as the lobby for the rest of the game. Then they head over to the dark Creeper Woods, an area where a caravan of villagers that are being shipped to labor in far-off lands is located. The player must stop the Illagers and free the captured villagers in the caravan. After the Creeper Woods level is completed, they unlock four locations, but only two of them are needed to progress through the story.

They can head to the Pumpkin Pastures, where all but one village have been destroyed by Illagers and the last remaining village is on the brink of invasion. So players must search for this last homely hearth and protect it from a large wave of invading Illagers summoned by the Arch-Illager. They can head over to the Soggy Swamp where the local witches are supplying the Arch-Illager and his army with potions, and deep within there is a powerful Corrupted Cauldron that provides the witches with these potions. The players must defeat the witches and destroy the Corrupted Cauldron to prevent the Arch-Illager from getting his hands on those potions. They can head into the Cacti Canyon, a scorching maze of ruins and hostile mobs where a supposed desert temple is located within, a temple which the Arch-Illager seeks in order to summon an army of the undead. Players must battle through the hot canyon and the scorching desert to find this temple before the Arch-Illager can. Finally they can head up north to the Redstone Mines, where the Illagers plan to use enslaved villagers to mine Redstone out of the mountains in order to empower the Arch-Illager even further. Players must move through this claustrophobic dark environment and free the villagers from a hypnotic spell that forces them to work for the Illagers. At the end of the mines, players will discover an entrance to a forge within the mountains. The Pumpkin Pastures and Soggy Swamp are optional missions, meaning that they are not required to progress with the main story, but can still award players with achievements from completing them and let them experience an extra part of the story. After beating the Redstone mines and Cacti Canyoin, they unlock another two story important locations.

They can back to the mountains, this time to enter the highly guarded Fiery Forge, a place where the Illagers make everything from might Redstone Golems to Enchanter Books and Vindicator axes. It is the beating heart of the Arch-Illager's war machine, and destroying it would deal heavy damage to the Illager's industrial capabilities and their morale. Players will have to activate Redstone Cores to help power a large newly created machine known as the Redstone Monstrosity, which they will have to fight near the end of the forge. They can head back to the desert where they must enter the Desert Temple in search of a necromancers staff that can summon the undead. The Arch-Illager seeks this staff for himself so he can summon armies of the undead. Players have to destroy this staff before it can be used by the Arch-Illager, but find out that it is used by a nameless ruler, a master necromancer that can summon skeleton vanguards and create mirror images of itself. It will try to fend off the player to protect its staff but the player must defeat it in order to destroy its staff. After the player clears both of these locations, they only have two more locations left for the main story.

They now can head in to the Arch-Illager's castle, where he is hosting a party to celebrate his recent victories over the villagers and other opponents. Many Illagers are present here, including his elite Royal Guards, so players must take great caution while roaming through the castle. They encounter a buffet set up by the Vindicator Chefs for the Illager partygoers, so the players have to destroy the buffet tables in order to crash the party. They then head to the throne room and confront the Arch-Illager in person for the first time. In response, The Arch-Illager summons a massive wave of Illagers as a final attempt to ward off the players. After the ambush is cleared, they can then proceed onwards to the Obsidian Pinnacle to track down the Arch-Illager once and for all. They must battle through large crowds of Illagers and multiple Redstone Golems on these narrow ramparts while in the heart of the storm. They then head to a large platform where the Arch-Illager is found. The Arch-Illager, with no other options left, decides to fight the players himself using the orb's powers. He can fire projectiles and summon large groups of Vindicators, Pillagers and even a Redstone Golem occasionally. Once he is defeated, he is absorbed into the Orb of Dominance and transforms into the Heart of Ender, which is believed to be the manifestation of the Orb of Dominance. The heart of ender tries to kill the players with lasers and fire mortars. Once the player defeats the Heart of Ender, the orb explodes and the Arch-Illager along with the mainland is free from its corruption. The main story is complete, but the Orb isn't completely gone yet.

The player can purchase additional DLC locations or can receive them from bundles like the Hero Pass or Season Pass. These locations continue the main story on Island Realms where shards from the orb of dominance has brought its corruption to these islands and has cause major damage to their environments. The first is a Jungle island where the player has to venture through the Dingy Jungle in order to find an Overgrown Temple, where a might Jungle Abomination is located within. They must defeat the Orb's new creations like the Leapleaves and the Whisperers, and eventually defeat the abomination to free the jungle from the shard's corruption. The second island is a once lively island that was frozen over in a creeping winter brought on by a corrupted Wraith known as the Wretched Wraith. They must travel through a Frosted Fjord in search of a Lone Fortress within, where the Wretched Wraith is located. They have to deal with new challenges like the icy water and some of the exclusive mobs like the Iceologer and the Stray, and the Wreathed Wraith itself which is found within the grand chamber of the fortress. The players must defeat the Wraith to free the land from its long dreadful winter. The third island is a large mountainous island that became super windy due to the shard corrupting an ancient Tempest Golem. The players must heap up the Windswept Peaks in order to find a Gale Sanctum at the top. The Tempest Golem is located within this sanctum and must be destroyed. Players will encounter new challenges like mighty wind gusts that can blow player off the peaks if they are not careful, and new mobs like the Wind Callers, Mountaineers, Ravagers and the sanctum's Squall Golems. Once the player destroy the Tempest golem the mountain now has gentle breezes compared to the harsh winds of before.

The player can also head to the Nether as well. Unlike the other locations, the nether has no Orb shard within and therefore has no story nor final bosses that the player must kill. The player can play through six levels here, five of which are based on Nether biomes and the other one takes place within a Nether Fortress.

The player may also encounter some special locations or variants of already existing locations during Ancient Hunts. Some Ancient Hunt locations are the Woodland Mansion, Woodland Prison and the Spider Cave.

There are also 6 hidden secret locations as well that can be found using scrolls found in specific areas of levels. These secret locations hold no values to the story whatsoever, but are still are cool to explore and can sometimes award players with achievements if unlocked. The secret locations of Minecraft Dungeons include: The Creepy Crypt; a large crypt located under the Creeper Woods that the villager plan to use to continue their work, The Soggy Cave; a cave underneath the Soggy Swamp containing several treasures that should be claimed before the Arch-Illager can, The Arch Haven; a coastal outpost located on the edge of the pastures inhabited by Illagers. Players must drive them out and take the spell books located on stone plinths before leaving the island, The Lower Temple; the basement are of the desert temple which contain plenty of treasures. The player must head down here to make sure there are no lingering Illagers, The Underhalls; the basement of Highblock Castle, contains tons of loot to collect and mobs that must be defeated, and The ??? level, a mysterious mushroom island full of aggressive mooshrooms and a mighty Mushroom Monstrosity, which must be destroyed before leaving the island. There are also 3 DLC exclusive secret levels, they include: The Panda Plateau; a bamboo forest on a sprawling cliffside that is home to a community of Pandas, which are now caged up due to the shards corruption. The players must clear the corruption out of the forest and free the Pandas, The Lost Settlement; an old settlement build by miners long ago on the shore of a great lake and has been frozen in ice thanks to the creeping winter. The player must free the settlement from the Illagers and discover the lost treasures within, and the Colossal Rampart; a massive wall that stretches around the base of the peaks that has been abandoned long ago, but was reclaimed by the Illagers recently. The players must push the Illagers out of the rampart while they still can and defeat the Rampart Captain within.
